There are potentially a number of ways in which to fund the provision of legal advice and assistance.
Initial interview
The starting point for the provision of legal services is the face-to-face interview. For initial interviews held at our offices with the Principal Solicitor we charge as follows (VAT @ 20%):
• ½ hour interview: £120 + VAT (£144)
• 1 hour interview: £200 + VAT (£240)
• 2 hours' interview: £350 + VAT (£420)
Sometimes all the substantive issues can be discussed at the initial meeting, advice given and any follow-up work agreed and completed. If further work after the initial meeting is required this is charged out as follows.
Hourly rates
This is the traditional method of charging for legal services.
For a grade A solicitor: £278 + VAT (£333.60) per hour
For a grade B Solicitor: £233 + VAT (£279.60) per hour
For a grade C Solicitor: £190 + VAT (£228) per hour
For a Trainee Solicitor or Paralegal: £134 + VAT (£160.80) per hour
Grades of solicitor are based on how many years of post qualification experience they have. We are always willing to have a conversation with clients or potential clients about the cost of legal services and negotiate a suitable charge out rate based on their circumstances and the work to be done.
Travel and waiting times (if applicable) will be charged out at half of the fee-earner's hourly rate + VAT. Mileage (if applicable) is charged out at 45p per mile + VAT (54p).
Fixed fees
Fixed-fees are possible for certain types of work (e.g. lasting powers of attorney etc). Please enquire for details of fixed-fee work. A quote for the work involved in the preparation of documents can usually be given over the phone after a short conversation.
Contingent fees
Sometimes referred to as "no-win, no fee" agreements, these can be available to help fund all or part of a case. Generally, these may be appropriate for cases where compensation or damages are being claimed. This is a technical area and the type of agreement will depend on whether the claim is regarded in law as "contentious" or "non-contentious".
Insurance-backed advice
Depending on whether you are bringing or defending a claim, the type of claim and its merits (prospects of success) it may be the case that you will be covered by a pre-existing legal expenses insurance. This can be a free-standing policy or part of a buildings/contents or motor insurance policy. You may be covered by an employer's or trade union scheme. If so, the costs of the legal work performed may be met by the insurer.
Legal aid
We have a contract with the Legal Aid Agency to provide legal advice and assistance in the category of Mental Health law including Court of Protection (welfare, deprivation of liberty & medical treatment matters). So, subject to financial eligibility, we can provide (generally) free legal advice and assistance in these areas. Representation at a Mental Health Tribunal is always free.
Please feel free to contact us about our charges.
All professional charges are subject to VAT (at 20%) and disbursements are separate to charges for time. A cap on costs can be agreed at the outset of a matter or as the matter progresses.
